Welcome to a fun and exciting way to find out new information. This WebQuest is designed to help students gain knowledge of Georgia history beyond the text books. During this WebQuest they will learn about the riots that happened in Augusta, Georgia in 1970.
In May, 1970, Augusta, Georgia experienced race-related riots. Many terrible things took place. The beating and death of 16 year old Charles Oatman that took place two days earlier started the fighting. It was reported that the two black cell mates were responsible but evidence proved otherwise. Tensions were already high, and this was the final straw.
During this WebQuest, you will learn about the riots and understand what happened in Augusta during this time. You will gain knowledge that will help you analyze what went on, the tension between the races and officials of the time, and understand how these riots contributed to the Civil Rights movements.
